Keep Your Head Still For A Good Golf Swing

Golfing No Comments »

I wish i had a dollar for every time i have heard the immortal words keep your head down “Your head came up again, thats the reason you hit a bad golf shot, Keep your head down” Then I would be very rich indeed. This advice, although given with your best interests at heart can and is a killer for a good golf swing … whatever else you do, keeping your head down shouldn’t have anything to do with your golf game, please – KEEP YOUR HEAD STILL.

The more you try to keep your head down during the golf swing, the less chance you have of achieving the correct full turn of your shoulders on the backswing. Your shoulder rotation will either be restricted by the head position or you will compensate by tilting your shoulders, either way keeping your head down is going to cause serious problems and they just get worse as i hear you screaming to yourself “gotta keep my head down, must keep my head down, please don’t let my head come up again” damn another bad shot !!!! and on and on …

If that’s the case then i am sure you are wondering what you can do. It is all so simple really and if you are struggling with your golf swing because you are concentrating on keeping your head down, STOP right now.

What you must do straight away is lift your chin up as high as you can while still being able to see the golf ball comfortably, then you will find you have a better golf posture keeping the back of your head in a straight line with your spine. Doing this will create room for your shoulders to turn correctly on the backswing without pushing your head to one side or to compensate by tilting, therefore allowing your head to remain STILL.

And that is the key that will help you to create a sound and repeatable swing, allowing you to maintain your height throughout the golf swing leading to more consistent golf shots. It will take you a while to get comfortable with your new head position but the end result is going to be worthwile, so work hard at it and reap the benefits.

Next time your on the golf course Try not to forget this simple golf swing tip … don’t keep your head down, Lift your head and this will allow you to keep your HEAD STILL. Which was after all what you had hoped to achieve when concentrating so hard to keep it down.

The greatest golf swing destroyed by the poorest aim

Golfing No Comments »

An important part of the process to improve your golf swing, depends upon the right preparation towards the golf ball. You should be able to strike the golf ball to where you need it to go. In discovering the game of golf it is vital for golf novices to focus on their aim when they prepare to address the golf ball.

Instead of improving your golf swing substandard aiming can devastate it. No achievement is possible without practice. Improve your golf swing on the practice range. Do it by laying two clubs on the tee. One golf club to be found parallel to your position and the second situated at right angles to it. The parallel golf club will assist you to establish a square preparation and the additional club running at right angles will pinpoint the location of the golf ball.

The line of your body runs to the left of the target. If you look over your shoulder you will be looking at the left hand side of the target area. If you observe the target area directly in front of you when you check over your shoulder you are aiming your golf swing to the right of the target area. The path of your club head also points in that direction.

To align the right way for your golf swing entails that your feet, knees and shoulders ought to be matching the path of the projected stroke. It is like hitting the golf ball on a railway line. The straight line of the left hand rail and the lines drawn through the knees, feet, hips and shoulders should all be parallel to each other. The golf ball is placed on the right hand rail aiming at the target.

For the beginner to improve his golf swing may be complicated enough and consequently this line up to the golf ball may appear to be very abnormal. The golfer will have to judge the traveling path without really being over the line of the intended shot, as well as evaluating the line while being sideways to the target. Not being able to line up right will contribute to you misguiding your shot regularly.

A fantastic golf tip to improve your golf swing and get the best of errors in alignment of the swing is to pick a mark a few inches in front of where you placed the golf ball.  Concentrate on the selected spot instead of your projected objective in the distance. The spot could be anything from a leaf to perhaps a piece of branch. After selecting your aiming spot you can address the golf ball by setting your feet and shoulders parallel to the imaginary line on the ground.

Certain players like to keep the aiming spot in mind throughout the whole golf swing. Some players turn their attention on the aiming spot, but also like to then check their target a few times before they initiate their golf swing. This may possibly contribute to a player feeling misaligned and wrongly shifting his position to one that feels more comfortable, but that is evidently an improper position. Dismiss the option of looking up at the target area. Find your spot, set-up and execute by using the imaginary line. By following all the above tips you are sure to improve your golf swing.

Take a Look Inside A Golf pro’s Bag

Golfing No Comments »

I have been playing golf as a professional for over 30 years and have used quite a few golf companies during this time when choosing the right golf bag, golf glove, golf clubs, golf shoes etc etc. for my game.
I am not one of the tour pros who get paid indecent amounts to endorse their products; I have to pay for mine albeit at a discount on the trade price. So i am not promoting the company, it is my honest opinion as a Golf Professional on the quality of the products i choose to use.

The Titleist PROV-1 is without doubt the best golf ball I have ever played and has been in my golf bag for many years; in fact I think I have used a titleist golf ball for the past 20 years. When I first started playing it was a Dunlop 65 fresh out of the wrapper, for those of you who do not know, golf balls used to be packaged in a wrapper back in the 1970’s and before. Time fly’s when your’e enjoying yourself so they say. Anyway what was i saying? Oh yeah, why the PROV-1? – Simple really, it goes a long way, flies high, stops on a dime and has a lovely soft feel for those shots around the green. Enough said.

My glove of choice is a Titleist Players golf glove or a Footjoy Sta-Sof golf glove, both are made from high quality cabretta leather making them a pleasure to wear with a good grip and soft feel. A lot of casual golfers use the All-Weather glove or synthetic versions, but I prefer the soft feel of leather and although the leather golf glove costs a little bit more they are well worth the extra money in my opinion. I know a few of you guy’s use the all-weather glove because it has reinforcement on the heel of the palm to help with wear and tear. Nearly every golf glove wears out there first, some quicker than others. But that is a fault of either your hold on the golf club, gripping the club too tightly at address and loosening your grip at impact, causing excessive wear and tear on your glove. But that’s another story, see your local pro and he will help with this.

The golf Irons i use are the Titleist Z-Blend Forged with a dynamic gold S shaft and tour velvet grip. They are a blended cavity to muscle back forged iron, this means that the long irons are cavity backed, the mid irons are a partial cavity and the short irons muscle back blade. This is not new technology but it is nonetheless a fantastic innovation, help where needed in the longer irons gradually blending to a blade type short iron for that classic look and playability. I love these irons, they are great to look at and have a lovely feel off the club head. In my humble opinion you cannot beat a forged golf club head for exceptional feel and playability.

Well that’s about it, just a small selection of the things you will find in my golf bag. The best golf ball, the best glove, the best irons and the best golfer of all time using them. OK scrap that last comment, we can all dream.

have a great time on the golf course, look after your golf equipment and if you are struggling with your game seek out a golf pro you like and respect and get some golf lessons from him. If you work at any changes in your game then you will reap the rewards from them in the long run, if you don’t, then it will be just like all the other golf tips you have discarded as being useless.

Golf Course management & Your handicap

Golfing No Comments »

It’s another day in the Golf Shop at my Golf Club and I am passing out scorecards for the weekly golf competition, when in walks Jim, a club member bemoaning his luck on the golf course. What’s wrong i asked and he said that they should destroy the 13th hole. It’s a nightmare for me he says, it always destroys my scorecard along with a few other holes I could tell you about.

Jim has a mid to high golf handicap so I asked him what’s your handicap these days Jim? i am a 17 handicap he said. just to let you know The 13th Hole on our golf course is a 368yd par 4 with a stroke index of 2. So I asked Jim what is your par for that hole? It’s a par 4 Kevin you know it is, he replied. It is for me I said, but what’s your par? He looked at me with a vacant stare so I proceeded to put him out of his misery.

Your par for that hole is 5 not 4, with your handicap you can take a 5 and still not lose anything in relation to your handicap. So each time you stand on the 13th tee and think about making a par 4 you are making it harder for yourself. Now if you stood on that tee and said to yourself it’s a par 5 you can bet the hole is gonna seem a lot easier to play. I am sure you would be more relaxed and think, that’s not difficult I can do that, and that is exactly how you should tackle every hole you play.

And that’s the problem most mid to high handicap golfers have, they are not playing their own game they are trying to play scratch golf. This is where good course management and mental approach comes in to play.

You must make out a your own personal scorecard relative to your handicap. With Jim’s handicap there is only one hole on the golf course that he is expected to par and that is stroke index 18 the easiest hole on the course. If your golf course has a par of 70 and you are playing off 15 then your par for the course is 85. I hope you get my drift here because it’s an important part of golf course management.

I know it goes against the grain but it will make each hole seem easier and allow you to play with and relax. Instead of getting out the driver on these tougher holes and then messing up because you feel you must try to get a par, take golf clubs you are more confident with. Now you have your new mental approach with regard to par you will be pleased to see how much easier it is to play each individual golf hole. A par 4 on the golf course where you have a shot means 3 strokes to reach the green and 2 putts. Think this way and you will be pleasantly surprised how many times you make an actual par, which in your case means … BIRDIE ….

I ended by telling Jim to think about your approach to the golf course now! Standing on par 3’s that now become par 4’s .. How much easier is that on the mind? With a nod of thanks and a gleam in his eye Jim left the shop and set off to the bar to join his friends and have a well-earned drink.

This great game of golf is difficult enough without putting a lot of pressure on yourself. Manage your own game better by thinking correctly and your course management will improve along with your enjoyment of the game. Look at every hole at your golf course in a different light. Draw up your own personal scorecard.. NOW !!
