Trump adds two more clubs to his bag
The Donald is at it again in the golf business. According to Joe Logan’s www.myphillygolf.com, the real estate (and now golf club) tycoon has purchased Pine Hill Golf Club outside of Camden, NJ and Branton Woods in Hopewell Junction, NY. They will be rechristened Trump National Golf Club—Philadelphia and Trump National Golf Club—Hudson Valley respectively
Pine Hill is a Tom Fazio track that holds the distinction of sitting practically next door to golf’s Holy of Holies, Pine Valley Golf Club. It has been historically a high-end public course that has made brief and rather unsuccessful forays into the realm of private clubs in recent years. Trump will look to take advantage of his brand image to present a club that people will pay around $10,000 to join and $6,700 in annual dues, as is rumored to be the new figures. Given the course’s reputation for being very challenging, Trump may employ the elder Fazio or his son Tommy to make the course more member-friendly.
As for Branton Woods, it was designed by Eric Berstol, who crafted the heralded Bayonne Golf Club in Bayonne, NJ. Branton Woods itself has always been well-regarded but the economic downturn has not spared it from hard times. Trump reportedly purchased it at a relative steal of $8 million compared to its original development price of $45 million. Say what you will about Trump’s ostentatious persona; he seems to be able to spot a good bargain.
Pine Hill and Branton Woods become the 10th and 11th clubs under Trump’s control and respectively the 3rd club in New Jersey and the second in New York. Trump seems to believe that this is a buyer’s market and time will tell if his aggression will pay off.
Happy Holidays.
