BALANCE
Lord knows that fairway woods can be a real pain to learn to hit. That’s because most companies use a 43 1/2″ shaft on their strong 3 and 3 woods. I hate to be the first to tell you guys this, but that used to be standard tour length for a driver. At least w/those old steel shafted wooden drivers–you could tee the ball up. When using this length of shaft while trying to sweep the ball off the fairway, or out of the first cut rough, it is awfully hard not to get too steep and smack that poor club into the dirt long before it ever reaches the ball. Ping not only made the club head smaller, but they chopped the shaft to 43″ for both the strong and the regular 3 wood. The face is a nice compact 147cc size and in conjunction w/the shorter shaft it’s easy to hit the ball from almost any lie. The shafts are exceptionally well mated to the head so that the weight distribution makes club head awareness automatic.
Club head awareness from waggle at address to back of the neck follow through is a cinch. I could tell exactly where it was at all times. The real give away on this is that it swings equally well w/all three shafts. They must have worked hand in hand w/the shaft companies to make this happen. Sometimes only an original OEM shaft feels this balanced w/the head, and you are locked into a real problem if your swing has different tastes than the shaft they are offering. They are all 3 fine choices that suit several swing types, and mate to the head as if all three of them were the OEM shaft.
THE SHAFTS
These are just superior choices in today’s market place, which has practically abandoned the art of the fairway wood, in favour of a search for more and better hybrids. Nice to see that Ping really stuck w/the Craftsman’s like approach to this game plan. The OEM TFC shaft comes in Soft Regular-Regular-Stiff-and Extra Stiff. Even the soft regular checks in at only a moderate torque rating of 3.6 and at only 61 grams makes gaining club head speed a real possibility. The Reg. checks in @ 3.4=64 grms.—The Stiff @ 3.3 = 68 Grms, and the X-Stiff @ an ultra low 2.4 Torque @ a meagre 71 grms.. This is a very very nice OEM Shaft, unlike the dog that they put on the new driver. It fits almost all club head speeds, and offers a mid-mid-high trajectory.
The Pro Launch Red is a real nice shaft for those of you who like lower-mid-low trajectories. It comes in at a Moderately Low Torque Rating of 3 across all flexes. Speaking of flexes, you get Reg=69 grams, Stiff = 72 Grams, as does the Extra Stiff-again=72 Grams. If you are a low-capper, or just have lots of club head speed, but balloon your shots–this might be the shaft for you.
The V2 High Launch, as w/the driver, turned out to be my favourite. Torque wise, it is actually the beefiest of the bunch. It comes in at a nice low 2.8 across all flexes. Reg = 70 grams, Stiff=71 Grams, and X-Stiff=72 grams. This is a very nice shaft period. Thanks to it’s lower kick point it offers a nice high trajectory, but also–thanks to it’s lower torque rating, it is easy enough to work things out so that you don’t end up w/any unexpected balloon shots.
CLUB HEAD
Nice touch w/the internal weight pads here. They help for a lower center of gravity on both the Regular, and the Draw Versions of this club. As w/the driver, I actually don’t care for the Draw Version, because it uses both a weighting bias towards the heel, and an offset hosel. That’s a heck of a lot of over-compensation. If, however, you have trouble slicing your fairway woods–you may want to look in to these.
Loft Options
Wow!!!!!!!!!! One of the last companies to still offer a whole family of woods. Thanks Ping! You can get a Strong 3=14*, Reg3 =15.5* (Both =147CC), 4 Wood (Hogan’s Favourite)=17* (144CC) , 5 Wood @18.5* (142cc), 7 Wood= 21.5* (139CC), and a 9 Wood = 24.5* (135CC). Notice that these woods play out closer to the old school standard of loft as well. When combined w/the more compact head it makes chunking the wood a lot less of a possibility, and launching the ball the more likely outcome. (The Draw Version comes in the 3,4,5, and 7 wood models only.)
DISTANCE and WORKABILITY
Thanks to the superior balance between club head and shaft, as well as a friendlier loft, and slightly shorter shaft, this family of woods offers real distance and workability. I found that a 200 yd shot from the first cut rough w/a sharp dog leg right about 3/4’s of the distance wasn’t that hard to execute. I simply set up for a high cut shot–and Voila!!! Really peaved a couple of guys in the foursome that needed that mark. Similar results were achieved on an almost mirror image shot later on w/a sharp dog leg left. This is a long club, that is easy to work.
Never miss the life-time chance!!!
Come on!!!
